NGC5128 Centaurus A

NGC 5128 12 Mly away in Centaurus, is one of the closest radio galaxies to Earth, so its active galactic nucleus has been extensively studied by professional astronomers. The galaxy is also the fifth brightest in the sky, making it an ideal amateur astronomy target. It is only visible from the southern hemisphere and low northern latitudes.

M83 the Southern Pinwheel Galaxy

Messier 83, also catalogued as NGC 5236, is a spiral galaxy in the constellation Hydra. It is one of the closest and brightest spiral galaxies in the sky, and sometimes called the "Southern Pinwheel".Messier 83 was discovered by Nicholas Louis de Lacaille at the Cape of Good Hope in 1752. It was the third galaxy discovered, after M 31 and M 32, and the first discovered beyond our Local Group. Charles Messier added M 83 to his catalogue in 1781; its spiral structure was first noted by William Lassell.

M104 the Sombrero Galaxy

Messier 104 is known as the "Sombrero" galaxy. It is a spiral galaxy in the constellation Virgo, whose bright nucleus, unusually large central bulge, and prominent dust ring give it the appearance of a Mexican hat.

NGC2997

NGC 2997 is about 25 million light-years away, and is speeding away from us at about 1100 kilometers per second. It is the brightest galaxy of the NGC 2997 group of galaxies. NGC 2997 is thought to have a mass of about 100 billion times that of our Sun, but is probably less massive than our own Milky Way Galaxy. NGC 2997 is particularly notable for a nucleus surrounded by a chain of hot giant clouds of ionized hydrogen.

NGC3621

NGC 3621 appears roughly 9.8 x 4.0 arcminutes in size, corresponding to a physical diameter of 62178 light years. It is a barred spiral galaxy of morphological type SBcd, and is receding at 730 kilometers per second - about 0.2% of light speed.

NGC6744 the Pavo Galaxy

This beautiful spiral galaxy is about 25 million light years away. NGC 6744 is believed to one of the most Milky Way-like of all the nearby spirals, with fluffy (flocculent) spiral arms and a large and distinctly elongated nucleus.

NGC 6744 also has at least one distorted companion galaxy, superficially similar to one of the Magellanic Clouds. The northernmost spiral arm of NGC 6744 is most likely being stretched due to tidal pull from the dwarf companion. The companion will ultimately merge with NGC 6744 in the distant future.

NGC1365 the Great Barred Spiral Galaxy

This bright, 10th magnitude galaxy is one of the finest of its class, and is visible in an 8-inch telescope. The galaxy has a well-defined 4' long E-W bar, with a bright core at its center. The core is a bright oval about 50" x 40", with a sharp stellar nucleus. The wispy spiral arms curve north and south from the ends of the bar, gradually tapering to points, and form a rounded Z-shaped halo. Traces of dust lanes can be glimpsed along the major axis. A magnitude 13.5 star is at the point of the northern arm 1.5' NW of the galaxy's center.
